Indigenous People in the Americas: Connecting to and Creating Native Collections
Convention Center Rm 334
    As the world moves online, so do the resources we rely on. The new Library of Congress Classification for "Law of Indigenous Peoples in the Americas" is currently under study to make the most of its functions for accessing web resources on Tribal law. This workshop will introduce the current work at the Library of Congress; show how this tool assists in web searches; and demonstrate its capabilities for collection and reference work. Participants will also learn about the range of Native legal resources available in print and online and get tips on building a core Native legal collection.

Why Didn't Anyone Tell Me That! Reflections from Librarians in the Trenches

    Library school teaches standard topics such as cataloging and information theory, however, thereare often too few courses that prepare you for the real-life, day-to-day challenges of being a librarian. This session will focus on the experiences of five library professionals with varying degrees of time in the field. Panelists from the five ethnic caucuses will discuss how internships and professional networks can help sustain a librarian, particularly those of color. They will also share their experiences of getting their “foot in the door.”

Raisin’ Readers: Improving Literacy for Rural Children and Youth

    Rural, Native, and tribal libraries sponsor, host, and launch initiatives that support young and teen readers and their families. This program will feature the Honorable James K. Bartleman, Canadian diplomat, author, literacy advocate, and member of the Mnjikaning First Nation, to share his thoughts for engaging youth in literacy programs and read from his young adult novel, “As Long as the Rivers Flow.”

Trickster: Engaging Readers, Honoring Traditions
Convention Center Rm 284
    For "Trickster: Native American Tales: A Graphic Collection," editor Matt Dembicki helped graphic artists and traditional storytellers collaborate to produce an engaging and respectful collection of Native American stories. This program will feature Dembicki and several storytellers presenting their tales, discussing their collaborative process, and highlighting the importance of bringing these stories to a new audience of readers while honoring their traditional origins.

Diversity is Everyone's Business: Sensitivities in the Workplace

    Diversity begins with being sensitive to the diversity of our co-workers. This program will features several presenters discussing how they address sensitive issues in the work place, from gender and sexuality, to hidden disabilities, to cultural sensitivities. Using these tips and suggestions, attendees will learn how to create respectful and safe working environments which benefit all staff.
